Within an hour you can be in a coastal rainforest reserve watching elephants; a little further lie the vast plains of Tsavo and, a short flight away, Amboseli beneath Kilimanjaro and the Masai Mara. Add the marine parks and islands offshore, and Diani is arguably the best beach base in Kenya for combining sand with safari. Shimba Hills National Reserve — the best quick safari
Perched on a green plateau above the coast, Shimba Hills is a rare pocket of coastal rainforest and grassland managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Its claim to fame is the elegant sable antelope, which is extremely scarce elsewhere in Kenya — Shimba holds the country’s main population. You’ll also find elephants (the adjacent Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary is part of the same ecosystem), plus butterflies and rare coastal plants. Tsavo East & West — big-game country
Tsavo is classic, wild, uncrowded safari country — lions (including the region’s storied maneless males), elephants, giraffe, and dramatic landscapes of red earth, lava flows and the Yatta Plateau. Can you do a safari from Diani Beach?
Yes, easily. Shimba Hills National Reserve is under an hour away for a half-day safari, Tsavo East and West are 2–3 hours (best as an overnight), and Amboseli and the Masai Mara are short fly-ins from Ukunda (Diani) airport.
What is the best safari from Diani?
For a quick trip, Shimba Hills is the best — close, scenic and the top place in Kenya to see sable antelope. For a fuller safari, an overnight in Tsavo or a fly-in to Amboseli or the Masai Mara is worth it.
How far is Tsavo from Diani?
Tsavo is roughly 2 to 3 hours’ drive from Diani. It can be visited on a long day trip, but an overnight safari is far more rewarding given the driving involved.
Why is Shimba Hills famous?
Shimba Hills National Reserve holds Kenya’s main population of the rare sable antelope, and also has elephants, buffalo and leopards in a coastal rainforest, plus the Sheldrick Falls walk. It’s the closest safari to Diani.
When is the best time for a safari from Diani?
The dry seasons — roughly June to October and January to February — offer the best game viewing, as animals concentrate around water and the vegetation is sparse. Rainy months can make some park tracks difficult.
Can you combine a beach holiday in Diani with the Masai Mara?
Yes. A scenic fly-in connects Diani (via Ukunda/Wilson) with the Masai Mara, making a two-centre bush-and-beach holiday straightforward. Allow at least two nights in the Mara.
