How to Get to Diani Beach
Every route to Diani compared — the fastest way, the cheapest way, and the local know-how that saves you time and hassle on arrival.

Diani Beach sits about 30 km south of Mombasa on Kenya’s South Coast, and getting there is easier than most first-timers expect. You have four realistic options — fly, take the SGR train, drive, or combine them — and the right one depends on where you’re starting, your budget and how much of your holiday you’re willing to spend in transit. This guide compares them all with real journey times, then shares the local know-how that saves time and stress on arrival.

By air: flying to Ukunda (Diani) Airport

Flying is the sensible choice for the vast majority of visitors. It turns a full day of overland travel into a one-hour flight, and — crucially — it bypasses Mombasa’s traffic and the Likoni ferry altogether. Ukunda is a tiny airstrip: check-in and arrivals are quick and informal, and you’ll be in a transfer vehicle within minutes of landing. Safarilink’s routing from Wilson also makes Diani easy to bolt onto a safari, since you can connect from the Mara or Amboseli without going back through central Nairobi.
Getting to Diani from Nairobi
Our dedicated Nairobi to Diani guide compares all four in detail with current fares. In short: fly if your time matters, take the SGR if you want an affordable, comfortable and scenic journey, and only self-drive if the road trip is part of the plan — the Nairobi–Mombasa highway is busy with trucks and can be slow.
Getting to Diani from Mombasa
For years every South Coast traveller had to queue for the Likoni ferry, which could add anything from twenty minutes to well over an hour at peak times. The Dongo Kundu bypass has changed that: it links the mainland to the South Coast by road, so a private transfer can now reach Diani without ever boarding the ferry. It’s slightly longer in distance but far more predictable in time. Full options on our Mombasa to Diani guide.
Taking the SGR (Madaraka Express) toward Diani

The Madaraka Express is comfortable, affordable and a genuinely pleasant way to travel — the line even skirts Tsavo, so you may spot wildlife from the window. The catch is the transfer at the Mombasa end and the fact that popular departures sell out. See timings, classes and how to link the transfer on our SGR to Diani guide.
The Likoni ferry and the Dongo Kundu bypass
The Likoni ferry is a Mombasa institution — free for pedestrians and cheap for vehicles — but it’s also one of the busiest ferry crossings in Africa, and queues can be long and chaotic at peak times. The Dongo Kundu bypass now offers a road alternative that skips it. Our Likoni ferry guide explains how each works, timings and safety.
Airport transfers and getting around once you arrive
However you reach the coast, the smoothest last step is a pre-booked private transfer — from Ukunda, from Moi International Airport, or from the SGR terminus — so you’re met and driven straight to your hotel at a fixed price. Once you’re settled, you’ll get around Diani by tuk-tuk, taxi, boda-boda or hired car; we cover fares and safety on our getting around Diani guide, and rentals on car hire in Diani.
