How to get to Diani: your options compared

By air: flying to Ukunda (Diani) Airport

Flying is the sensible choice for the vast majority of visitors. It turns a full day of overland travel into a one-hour flight, and — crucially — it bypasses Mombasa’s traffic and the Likoni ferry altogether. Ukunda is a tiny airstrip: check-in and arrivals are quick and informal, and you’ll be in a transfer vehicle within minutes of landing. Safarilink’s routing from Wilson also makes Diani easy to bolt onto a safari, since you can connect from the Mara or Amboseli without going back through central Nairobi.

Getting to Diani from Mombasa

For years every South Coast traveller had to queue for the Likoni ferry, which could add anything from twenty minutes to well over an hour at peak times. The Dongo Kundu bypass has changed that: it links the mainland to the South Coast by road, so a private transfer can now reach Diani without ever boarding the ferry.
